UNITS OF STUDY

Guidelines for Success

  • Come to school on time
  • Be prepared for class
  • Follow all classroom rules
  • Ask a lot of questions
  • Complete homework

Reading

  • Students should be reading books on their reading level every night for at least 20 minutes.
  • A leveled book is one that a child can read AND understand independently.
  • Students in 3rd grade are expected to read at the following independent reading level:
    • September (M) November (N) March (O) June (P/Q).

Writing

  • Students will learn how to write well-structured paragraphs and essays.
  • Students should already know how to write complete sentences and use punctuation.
  • Writers will use the Writing Process to express, develop and support their ideas.
    • (Writing Process consists of Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing)
  • Students will write personal narratives, informational essays about a country, and opinion essays about social and environmental issues.

Math

  • Students will be expected to have fluency of basic math addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
  • Students will learn how to use skills to solve word problems, using a variety of strategies.
  • Topics in 3rd Grade are: Multiplication, Division, Data, Addition, Subtraction, Fractions, Area, Perimeter, Time
