SLT Meeting Minutes

September 26, 2023


Present: A. Ortiz (parent), V. Pacay (parent), C. Alvarez (PA President), V. Pou (staff member), Gomez (staff member), J. Pace (UFT Chapter Leader), T. Moschella (Principal)


Meeting time: 2:30 - 4:00 PM

  1. Welcome to members
    1. Introductions
    2. In person meeting requirement
  2. Principal report
    1. Purpose of SLT 
      1. align the school budget to goals, create and revise CEP, get input and make instructional decisions on instructional programs, 
      2. Title I PAC - after Title I meeting will report parent choice of spending funds 
      3. Comprised of 5 staff members, 5 parents (1 parent vacancy), 3 mandated members - Principal, UFT chapter leader, PA president
      4. SLT guided by Chancellor’s Regulation A-655
    2. What is the CEP - school comprehensive education plan that details all school programs and curriculum, including data and goals. Main purpose of SLT is to write the CEP and will be a part of all meetings, public document 
    3. Bylaws - bylaws were read, explained and clarifying questions were asked
    4. Open Meets law - SLT is a public meeting. If someone who is not on the committee would like to speak, they must make a request in advance to be put on the agenda
    5. Roles - members select roles outlined in the bylaws
    6. Set dates and time for future meetings
  3. UFT report
    1. Last year’s change from PTA to PA, teachers want to get back to a PTA so staff and parents can work together 
    2. Special events are coming up and details will be shared once finalized 
  4. PA president report
    1. Good turnout for September PA meeting (71 parents)
    2. PA president states parents want to work along with teachers and be a part of our school community
    3. Parents want to be a part of school activities
    4. Parents want to see teachers engaged in parent activities 
  5. RiseBoro
    1. Ms Berrios, director and Ms Best, instructional director were present
      1. Summer Rising went well but they did face some challenges 
      2. RB has 128 out of 150 seats filled for after school program, expansion to 165 is not being offered citywide 
      3. Instruction during after school (after homework help) - following Next Generations Standards, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering Math) lessons, SEL (Social Emotional Learning) classes, dance, art
      4. RiseBoro will conduct parent outreach on the topics of housing, adult education, food services. Interest survey will be sent out to parents for other topics to cover

October 3, 2023

 

Present: V. Pacay (parent), C. Alvarez (PA President), V. Pou (staff member), Gomez (staff member), G. Pangbourne (staff member), F. Tuala (parent) T. Moschella (Principal)

 

Meeting time: 2:30 - 4:30 PM


  1. Principal report
    1. 2023 NYS ELA and Math data - pre pandemic we were at 39% students at or above  grade level our goal to to get back to 39% and beyond. 
      1. 2023 ELA was 29% (up 9 percentage points from 2022 21%)  
      2. Data used to determine CEP goals, instructional programs 
      3. Principal shared grade level expectations 
      4. 2023 Math was 26% (up 7 percentage points from 2022 19%)
    1. This year we are using a new math program called Illustrative Math
    2. Attendance - our school is one of the top 3 schools in the district (we are actually at #1 today!!)
    3. Fall Harvest parade will take place on October 31 at 1:30 
    4. We have 3 marking periods (sept-Nov/Nov-Mar/Mar-June), November and March parent teacher conferences based on report card scores
    5. Bylaws are available to members
  1. UFT report
    1. Special events - Harvest festival on October 26 - each class has students go outside and pick a pumpkin from our “pumpkin patch”. Parents from K to 2 will be invited in to decorate pumpkins with their child.
    2. Parents should be aware that all students are invited to their teacher’s google classroom 
  1. PA president report
    1. We want to host a teacher appreciation event and give out prizes for various things
    2. We will voting on our additional SLT seat on October 10.
    3. PA president shared that an announcement for the potluck for Spanish Heritage Month for parents and school staff which will take place on 10/20 at 9a.m.
    4. PA president shared desire to celebrate a school spirit week at the end of the month.
  1. CEP 
    1. MS Pangbourne what the CEP is and how it reflects information about our school
    2. Our team creates the CEP
    3. We will review goals at next month’s meeting
  1. RiseBoro
    1. Ms Best, instructional director was present
      1. RiseBoro will continue to offer homework help, engage students in activities, offer literacy, practice english strength, Dance,Visual, Prevention workshops and/or SEL.
      2. We were able to have 165 students and now we can only have 150 due to low staff.
      3. After the last SLT we got five more students and now we are currently at max. We have the space, not the staff.

    1. Ms. Pacay asked questions pertaining to the potluck event.
    2. Dr. Moschella will resend uniform letter to parents to include gym day

School Leadership Team Minutes
November 21, 2023
  1. Greetings/Welcome
  2. Principal’s Report
    1. Safety and Security- We currently have an intercom system installed. NYCPS has named the project  Safer Access but it's not in use as of yet. When we begin to use it, letters will be sent home. Visitor policies remain the same.
    2. Magnet Grant- We had a kickoff event and it was great! Uniforms were given to parents. (1) Uniform per student and we have additional uniforms for purchase.We still have uniforms that have not been retrieved by parents therefore; we will be doing outreach calls.* Magnet Committee leads : Ms.Triolo (Resource Specialist) and Ms. Rivera (Site Coordinator) There are 12 members of the Magnet Committee all taking on various roles
    3. BOY testing data - Dr. Moschella demonstrated bar graphs of the ELA and Math iReady assessments and shared that the NYS assessment scores are available online on the NYC Schools Account.
  3. PA Report- We had a quick meeting with the PA this morning and agreed that for our next     meeting on 12/12/23 at 9:30a.m. we will be discussing with regard to the Title I funds . Parents will share their ideas on what to spend the funds on. We will present all the ideas at our next SLT meeting.
  4. UFT Report - No updates to report
  5. CEP- A presentation of how to access the CEP via the Iplan portal. Goals- Reading goals were shared.
  6. RISEBORO Afterschool Program- Afterschool is at full capacity with 165 students registered.We currently have a waiting list. We will not be open for Thanksgiving or during December break, but will be open for February break. Students will be working on phonics and sight words. Students are working with actual cards for kids to read to each other. 
  7. Open Forum- Dr.Moschella shared that will be having an author visit from Johanna Hurwitz. We are also having holiday performances by Mr. McKoy and Ms. Potaznik.
