COMPASS AT P.S. 86 after-school program is located within Public School 86 at 220 Irving Avenue in Brooklyn.  It is a comprehensive youth development program that will meet the needs of our youth and aid them in building a set of core assets and competencies needed to participate successfully in adolescent and adult life.

This comprehensive program incorporates positive youth development principles such as ensuring the safety and health of our youth, providing caring adult role models, empowering youth, integrating the family, school, and community and offering opportunities for youth to develop individual skills and competencies.

The COMPASS AT P.S. 86 program consists of two main components:  an after-school and summer camp through which we meet our program goals.

  • Goal 1: Foster social and emotional competencies and physical well being
  • Goal 2: Provide opportunities for youth to explore their interests and creativity
  • Goal 3: Build skills that support academic achievement
  • Goal 4: Cultivate youth leadership and community engagement
  • Goal 5: Engage parents and other caretakers to support the above goals

The COMPASS AT P.S. 86 after-school program operates Monday Through Friday from 2:15 to 6:00 pm.  On school holidays, the program operates all day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Activities offered include homework assistance, tutoring, arts and crafts, visual arts, music, vocal, STEM, literacy, character building, leadership and community involvement, individual and group counseling, health, living, and physical recreation.  Youth showcase some of what they learn through a final performance.

Our summer camp remains at PS 86 and operates from Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  The youth are escorted on trips and participate in a variety of activities similar to those offered during the school year and also showcase their achievements in a final performance.
