Book of the Month

Dive Into Our Monthly Book Adventure!

PS 86K is proud to continue a wonderful literacy initiative we launched in the 2022-2023 school year: our "Book of the Month" program! Each month, students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 all focus on the same captivating book with a strong central theme. Teachers receive a new selection monthly, sharing stories that build cultural awareness and character education. The characters in these books model essential traits like honesty, tolerance, caring, responsibility, and respect for themselves and others.

This initiative does more than just boost reading skills—it aligns with our focus on the social and emotional needs of our students and helps increase vocabulary. By having every class from K-5 reading, discussing, and doing activities around the same book, we are excited to continue unifying our school community through the power of a great story!

What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick
What If Everybody Did That? is a wonderful, light-hearted picture book that teaches children about responsibility, good choices, and the power of their actions. The story follows a young boy who makes several small mistakes, like littering a soda can, running with a grocery cart, or talking out of turn. Each time, an adult asks the simple, thought-provoking question: "What if everybody did that?" The book encourages children to think critically about how their small, individual choices—both positive and negative—have a big ripple effect on their community and the world around them.

October 2025 Book of the Month
The book, "Whatever Comes Tomorrow" by Rebecca Gardyn Levington, is a beautiful and lyrical picture book designed to help children (and adults) manage worry and anxiety about the unknown. The core message of the book is resilience and inner strength. It gently reminds children that while they can't control what happens next, they can control how they respond. It offers simple, calming strategies, like taking a deep breath and repeating the affirmation, 'I am strong,' to help them feel confident and capable of facing any challenge. nspired by the author's own experience with anxiety, this book serves as a comfort and a guide, making it an excellent read-aloud or bedtime story to ease next-day jitters.
