Dear District 32 Community,

I am humbled and honored to transition on to the new role as the Acting Superintendent of Community School District 32. I am excited to continue the forward momentum that we’ve established as a district in order to transform teaching and learning for all students across our community. I look forward to strengthening our partnerships with the school leaders, parents, guardians, teachers, scholars, and community members that I’ve met and have had the pleasure of working with during my time as a Deputy Superintendent. District 32 is a district at HOPE, practicing and believing that all our students are capable of success, NO EXCEPTIONS. I will work tirelessly to ensure that we live up to this mantra each and every day.

District 32 is my heart. As many of you know, I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I am the product of New York City public schools in the neighboring District 14. I began my career as an educator as an elementary school teacher at P.S. 123 in District 32. Over the years, I’ve worked as an instructional coach, an adjunct professor at LaGuardia Community College teaching bilingualism and ESL courses to aspiring teachers. In 2008, I became a principal at 25Q201, and worked to transform a struggling school into a 21st Century learning hub, making it the first NYC school with a Creative Learning Systems SMART lab.

In 2018, I was blessed to have the opportunity to return to the District 32 community as the Deputy Superintendent. I brought with me years of experience as an educator and a leader, and my commitment to ensuring that all our students receive what they rightfully deserve in order to thrive academically and in life, regardless of circumstance. During the past 3 years, I’ve worked alongside different stakeholders within our community with a focus on ensuring that all our efforts culminate in the classroom in tangible impacts on students and their learning.

I am committed to serving and leading the District 32 community with compassion and purpose. I promise to always listen and advocate for the best interests of our scholars and our school communities. But this work cannot be accomplished by any one person—I will need each and every one of you. There is so much we have yet to accomplish together, and I look forward to learning and achieving in service of our students and families alongside you. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to lead, support, and transform District 32.

In Partnership,

Dr. Rebecca Lozada

Acting Superintendent of District 32

Dear District 32 Community:

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Superintendent Sheila Gorski on her retirement, effective November 5, 2021. I am deeply grateful for her 36 years of dedicated service to the children of New York City and District 32. She has built a district where every student is valued and held to high expectations for their success. She leaves a strong legacy of instructional leadership and excellence through enrichment opportunities for all students from STEM and STEAM to Project Based Learning to District-wide Computer Science. She has truly led a district where every student can be successful, no exceptions.

Secondly, I would like to introduce the Dr. Rebecca Lozada as Acting Superintendent of District 32, effective November 8, 2021. Dr. Lozada is currently the Deputy Superintendent of District 32 in Bushwick, Brooklyn but began her career in education teaching K-5 classes, coaching staff and working as an instructional leader and advocate for students in District 32. She was also an adjunct professor at LaGuardia Community College teaching the Bilingualism and ESL courses to aspiring teachers and later on in her professional trajectory, she became the principal of 25Q201 for ten years, where she transformed the school into a 21st Century learning hub, making it the first NYC school with a Creative Learning Systems Smart Lab.

In 2018, Dr. Lozada returned to the District 32 community as the Deputy Superintendent. She brought with her extensive experience as an educator and a leader and coupled that with her passion for the students and families of Bushwick, Brooklyn. During her time with District 32, she has worked to establish a District Instructional Leadership Team to strengthen instruction in every D32 classroom. She has also launched the District 32 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team to develop an equity lens to examine structures, systems, and processes across all schools in order to make learning more equitable for all students. She continues to prioritize building leadership capacity at all levels and she champions the Kids At Hope initiative to grow the belief that all students are capable of success, No Exceptions!

Therefore, I would like to congratulate Dr. Lozada who will bring her 32 years of experience to move District 32 forward. She is looking forward to working with Community Education Council (CEC) 32 and collaborating with the Brooklyn North NYCDOE Borough Office to implement the Academic Recovery Priorities and Instructional Principles in school year 2021-2022. District 32 is well- positioned for success in the 21-22 school year and beyond and a new permanent superintendent will be selected following the completion of the Chancellor’s Regulation C-37 Process for hiring a new Community District Superintendent.

Lastly, it is my honor to serve as the Executive Superintendent of Brooklyn North and I look forward to continue supporting District 32 as it moves on with a new Superintendent. Please feel free to reach out to me with any comments, questions or concerns regarding this transition in District Leadership at KWatts@schools.nyc.gov or at 929 462 4700.

Be well.

Kindly,

Karen Watts

October 20th, 2021:

Dear Families,

We are well into the second month of our school homecoming, and I am so pleased that we have been able to get back into full swing while keeping our school communities healthy with minimal disruptions. Thanks to our multilayered health and safety protocols, our schools continue to be among the safest places in New York City.

You, our families, deserve enormous credit as well for doing your part in protecting your school communities: checking your children’s temperatures every morning, encouraging safe practices like physical distancing and handwashing, and making sure they are wearing their masks before they head off to school. Thank you so much for being our partners in prioritizing their health and safety, and keep up the great work!

One very important way we are keeping our schools safe is weekly random testing of unvaccinated students (grades 1 and above) for COVID-19. This kind of regular testing to track community spread is most effective when we can test as many students as possible, but to do that we need you to submit a consent form if you haven’t already done so. Thank you to those families that have already submitted.

You can fill out the testing consent form using your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA): schoolsaccount.nyc ↗️ or download the form online at schools.nyc.gov/covidtesting ↗️ and bring the completed version to your school. Testing is safe, quick, and easy. We urge you to provide this consent to help keep your child and our school communities safe. You can learn more about the in-school COVID-19 testing program and watch a video showing what your child can expect at schools.nyc.gov/covidtesting.

If you have a child age 12 or over, the other major step you can take for their health is to get them vaccinated if you have not done so already. The vaccines are playing a huge role in reducing infection rates across the city, and are safe, free, and available regardless of immigration status. I strongly urge you to look for a nearby location where your child can receive the approved Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by visiting vaccinefinder.nyc.gov or calling 877-VAX-4-NYC (877-829-4692). If your child is already vaccinated, please upload that information to the DOE Covid-19 Vaccination Portal at vaccine.schools.nyc ↗️

Thanks to your partnership, we have fully reopened our schools safely. The more families that provide consent for COVID-19 testing in schools and have their eligible children vaccinated, the greater the progress we can continue to make in protecting everyone across our City and in our schools.

In partnership,

Meisha Porter

New York City Schools Chancellor
