Reading
Students should be reading books on their reading level every night for at least 20 minutes.
A leveled book is one that a child can read AND understand independently.
Students in 3rd grade are expected to read at the following independent reading level:
September (M) November (N) March (O) June (P/Q).
Writing
Students will learn how to write well-structured paragraphs and essays.
Students should already know how to write complete sentences and use punctuation.
Writers will use the Writing Process to express, develop and support their ideas.
(Writing Process consists of Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing)
Students will write personal narratives, informational essays about a country, and opinion essays about social and environmental issues.
Math
Students will be expected to have fluency of basic math addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
Students will learn how to use skills to solve word problems, using a variety of strategies.
Topics in 3rd Grade are: Multiplication, Division, Data, Addition, Subtraction, Fractions, Area, Perimeter, Time
