At P.S. 86K we use a Common Core Standards-Based Reading Program called Into Reading published by Pearson. This instructional program is a comprehensive K-6 English language arts platform that incorporates both literature and informational texts, teaches foundational skills, and aides in vocabulary development. K-2 also uses the Into Reading phonics portion to teach letter sounds and decoding skills to our youngest readers. We recently introduced an initiative to expose children to new vocabulary with our Word of the Week program for all students in Kindergarten-Grade 5. This year we welcomed a Universal Literacy Coach to support our K-2 teachers.
Our Writing instruction happens across the three main genres with two cycles of Narrative, Informational, and Opinion units of study. Using a variety of mentor texts and exemplar writing pieces, students develop their craft of writing and demonstrate the key components of specific genres guided by the use of CCLS aligned standards. We strive to foster a love of learning in our students, particularly for literacy, and offer many opportunities for the students to engage in literacy-related activities, such as:
Author Visits – Past authors include Elizabeth Uhlig & Brandon Snider
World Read Aloud Day
Buddy Reading
Hosted Adventure Bound, an ELA game show for students in Grades 3-5
Dr. Seuss’s Birthday
Winter Themed Read Aloud & Craft Family Activities
